UR Summer Events

This year hundreds of MSU students as well as visiting students engaged in mentored research projects throughout the summer. Students had the opportunity to participate in several professional development opportunities that complemented their research experiences.

Networking Events

Two luncheon networking events helped connect students to the broader University community. Faculty discussed career paths, choosing a disciplinary focus, and the challenges and benefits of being a faculty member. Graduate students talked about different aspects of graduate school – from choosing a program to major projects and research foci. More than 300 students participated in these events.

Summer Research Forum

Most of the campus summer programs concluded with students presenting at MSU’s summer undergraduate research forum, the Mid- Michigan Symposium for Undergraduate Research Experiences (Mid-SURE). 294 students presented at the event; these students represented 87 different institutions. Approximately 264 faculty members mentored these students on their projects. Additionally, students were able to attend a graduate school fair. The fair included 26 graduate programs from 21 different institutions, such Purdue, Notre Dame, and Northwestern University. Mid-SURE 2015 will be held in late July.

To get your student researchers involved in these opportunities next summer, contact Megan Shannahan, Assistant Director for Undergraduate Research, at shannah2@msu.edu, or visit the Mid-SURE website at urca.msu.edu/mid-sure for more information.
