Research Summary:
Aiden's research examined how distinct eating disorder symptoms correlate with suicidal ideation as compared to suicide attempts among young adults in the United States. The study found that among participants who reported suicidal ideation, actual-desired BMI discrepancy, laxative use to control weight, and diuretic use to control weight were significantly associated with greater prevalence of lifetime suicide attempts. The results of the study indicate that independent of depressive symptoms, specific compensatory eating disorder symptoms are uniquely associated with increased prevalence of suicide attempts but not ideation, suggesting a contribution to an increase in an individual's capability for suicide.
