Claire’s research project was to design and build a device that would generate an ion beam as well as detect secondary electrons produced by that ion beam. After designing and building the device, Ardelean began to run preliminary experiments. The purpose of these experiments was to find the energy of the electrons produced by the ion beam traveling through a foil and producing secondary electrons. Ardelean found that the energy of the electrons must be about 20 volts. In the future Claire’s findings and her device will be used to study atomic structure.
