Brian Keas is the Director for Undergraduate Research in the Provost’s Office at Michigan State University. He credits undergraduate research experiences in northern Michigan (swimmer's itch control) and Costa Rica (seed dispersal by birds) as crucial to shaping his future career. Today, his research interests center on documenting biodiversity using simple techniques that allow people of all ages to connect with nature in their local places and to inspire them to understand, appreciate, and care for the environment. Recent scholarly publications (all with undergraduate co-authors) include a project for K-8 students to conduct research on moth diversity in their own backyards, an analysis of bird communities in Michigan’s jack pine habitat, and using fish to assess stream quality. Dr. Keas has taught and mentored undergraduates in environmental programs for more than two decades in Michigan and Ohio, and has leadership experience in university administration and study abroad programs. He received his doctorate from MSU in Zoology and Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, & Behavior, a master’s degree in Biology from Wake Forest University, and bachelor degrees in Biology and Chemistry from Hope College. Elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Dr. Keas supports impactful learning experiences across the liberal arts and sciences and considers himself a lifelong student.
