Research Topic: Managing Powdery Mildew in Wheat Graduation Year: 2024

Undergraduate Research in the Neighborhoods

The goal of Bella’s research project was to determine the effects of different fungicides on powdery mildew. To accomplish this, the fungicides were applied at different rates and in different combinations. Disease ratings were then taken to determine the severity of disease and how the wheat was affected by the fungicides. Powdery mildew can decimate the yield of a wheat field, given the right conditions. It is particularly devastating in areas that have high humidity in the summers but mid weather in the winters. While the disease does not typically affect Michigan growers, as out winters are too harsh for the pathogen to survive it can affect growers further south. As the plant begins to heat due to climate change, there is a potential for the disease to move north and begin to affect fields in Michigan.
